Why do Christians have to have someone else pay for their sins?

I don't understand why the sinner him/herself can't just own their own sins and face God on the Final Day. Why must someone else "pay" for their sins? The concept of Jesus dying on the cross to save the sins of human beings is totally beyond my comprehension. It just isn't logical to me at all. Could someone please explain this better to me?
