Leather wrapped steering wheel?

I've noticed in looking at used Jeep Grand Cherokees that most with leather wrapped steering wheels are either very worn looking or the leather has loosend a bit ( kinda like a gummy feel). Is there any way I can prevent this on a newer wheel? Are there any kind of maintainence or conditioning products I could use?
