Do species, other than humans, keep pets?

Why do we, a carnivorous species, keep pets? Mostly we keep inedible species as pets. Well, we like to think of cats and dogs as inedible, but in some countries they are eaten. Why do we in the West harshly judge those who eat animals we consider pets, when at the same time we eat animals (eg pigs, cattle) that others won't eat?
