You really need a solicitor to help you with your appeal, and it should be made clear that you did not get given the chance to get legal representation of your choice for your case. This really should have been adjourned so that you could seek legal advice, yes you had them, but was this really in the public interest to take to court, spend lots of public money to take to court if you genuinely did not know, and the sentence seems a bit harsh to me.Definitely appeal, and get a good solicitor.
